SAGE HR

Leave Management Module

About the project

Leave Management is considered one of the most important modules of any HR management system. All companies need it, and all systems offer it.

Our approach at Sage HR was bold: offer the most complete and comprehensive Leave Management module with the hypothesis that clients would be willing to learn how to configure it despite its complexity in exchange for sleeping well at night knowing the system, once configured, would calculate all the PTOs per jurisdiction.

Other products were more straightforward but did not consider all variables, which meant the HR team still had to do manual corrections.

It was counterintuitive, but looking at the non-niche is what allowed us to win!

Luis’ role

  • Growing

Sage HR was originally CakeHR, a Latvian startup later acquired by Sage.
Growing from a ten people company to a product backed by a 20k-employee behemoth was exciting and the typical case of “careful what you wish for.”
We now had all the resources we always wished to produce new features, but the knowledge was in the heads of very few people.

  • Insights and forecasting leaves using Machine Learning
I worked with the data team to produce a model where we could provide insights to the organization's management on when to expect the peaks of vacations, holidays, or people taking PTO.

The challenge was not finding a suitable ML model; we had a great data team. The true challenge was to make sure we were using the data ethically. We had to ensure the data would not be used to assume an individual would go on vacation or sick leave, but instead, how to help a shift manager reduce the risk of not having enough people on call.
